Steiff Teddy Bear Petsy blond, 24cm

This bear is a children version of a classic Steiff bear. It was introduced 1.10.2012.

Steiff Petsy teddy bears were first produced in 1928. The 13-inch bears featured a growling mechanism and unusual glass eyes that lent the creature a variety of expressions.
They were made in beige mohair, tipped with auburn.
Modern replicas have also been produced.
A cca 1930 Steiff Petsy teddy bear sold at a Skinner auction in 2009 for $14,000.

The teddy bear soft toy was developed apparently simultaneously by toymakers Morris Michtom in the US and Richard Steiff in Germany in the early years of the 20th century, and named after President Theodore "T.R." Roosevelt, Jr. 

The president Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear on a hunting trip in Mississippi in November 1902 and this incident became the topic of a political cartoon by Clifford Berryman in The Washington Post. Morris Michtom saw the drawing of Roosevelt and was inspired to create a new toy. He created a little stuffed bear cub and put it in his shop window with a sign that read "Teddy's bear," after sending a bear to Roosevelt and receiving permission to use his name. The toys were an immediate success and since then the Teddy bears are among the most popular gifts for children and are often given to adults to signify love, congratulations or sympathy.
